If you’ve spent any time at ArmchairBuilder.com, you’ve learned a few things about how to build a home.  We’ve created some great videos, articles, and digital resources to help you make your dream home a reality.  Having said this, we should mention that we have never really taken you through the complete process from start to finish.  So, that’s what we plan on doing over the next several months.  Here’s our plan of attack for creating your ultimate guide on how to build a home.

65 Steps in 65 Blog Posts

Our goal is to go through the complete process one step at a time showing you how to build a home.  We will place a new article, or step, on our blog every other business day.  Our plan is to start the guide today and keep going until we have taken you through the complete building process.  We may sneak in a post here and there about some other topic but for the most part, we will stick to the agenda.  When we are finished, you should have a really good understanding of how to build a home.

Only the Experts

If you conduct a google search on how to build a home, you will find all kinds of people wanting to tell you their experiences.  There are many people out there that think they are experts because they have built one or two homes.  Trust us when we say…they haven’t even scratched the surface on what can happen when building.  You don’t need a one or two timer telling you how to build a home when it’s the biggest investment you will ever make.  Can you imagine having a surgeon who has only performed two open heart surgeries operate on you?  Experience is golden when you need it.  We’re not saying you shouldn’t look around for all of the great information out there…just make sure it comes from a credible source from truly experienced people.  Our 65 steps on how to build a home will be based on the experience of building hundreds of homes in many different parts of the U.S.

No Builder Speak

We take pride in being the one building resource that keeps the information less technical.  Most of the time when you hear someone talking technical in any industry, they are trying to impress you.  We already know we are good… so we are here to help, not brag.  Our intent for this new guide is to give you each step in plain English.  We will use a few building terms that we think you need to know.  You will find most of these in our glossary at ArmchairBuilder.com  But other than that, we will keep it conversational.  If you catch us getting overly technical, please do everyone a favor and let us know.

Ask Questions, They’re Free

While going through the 65 steps, feel free to ask us any questions you might have.  The only dumb questions are those that go unanswered.  So, send us your questions about how to build a home to info@armchairbuilder.com.  If we think others could benefit from the question, we will share it in our next blog post.

One of the best things about building your own home is that you can do some of the physical work yourself.  If you have the skills and the time, you can save some serious money by tackling some of the projects yourself.  In fact, we have some great articles and videos here at Armchair Builder showing you how to do some of these DIY building tasks.  However, this new guide will focus on managing the process.  We will show you how to build a home as the general contractor managing the subcontractors, budget, quality and schedule.

Only What You Need, Nothing More

Have you ever watched a movie or read a book and wished they had cut the middle part out?  It’s easy to add unnecessary filler.  Our goal with this guide on how to build a home is to give you everything you need and nothing you don’t.  In other words, we intend to cut out the filler.
