I was recently watching the new show on HGTV called House Hunter’s Renovation. Basically a couple looks for their perfect home, just like the regular House Hunters, and once they find the perfect house, they renovate it to their liking. As I watched the show, I realized the gal that was staring was the perfect owner builder. We’ve been discussing here at Armchair Builder what makes a good candidate for building or renovating your own home. Well this lady’s family is in the millwork business selling things like door and window casings, crown molding, window ledges…etc.
So Why is She the Perfect Owner Builder?
Since she is in the construction industry, she has the contacts to get the work done at a significant discount. Not only did she get special deals on the trim and doors for her home, but she already had relationships with others that she works with in the business. No matter what industry your career is in, it’s hard not to rub elbows with other people with similar businesses. Whether you meet at a conference, trade show or training seminar, you have opportunities to network with people in your industry.
So how did these contacts help this new homeowner with her renovation? They were able to give her sound advice about products and we assume, give her special discounts. There’s nothing better than knowing the people you choose to do business with as they are less likely to take advantage of you and in most cases, will take better care of you.
Another thing that made this new homeowner a perfect candidate to become an owner builder was her construction experience. Yes, she is in sales, not the actual installation. But having dealt with architects, builders, and homeowners she has inside knowledge about the business. She has seen first hand how things work and can apply that experience to her own home renovation.
