If you want to save yourself some headaches, make sure you only use trades that regularly do what you are hiring them to do.  As you all know, I regularly write about things that happen on my projects.  Well, today I excavated for a new home start.  The company that I use to dig for my foundations has a spectacular equipment operator that usually does all of my work.  Unfortunately, he was on vacation today.

So, they sent a guy that normally excavates for underground pipeline installation.  News flash:  Excavating for a pipeline  is VERY different from excavating for a foundation of a new home.  The machine operator started this morning at 7 am and as of 10 am still hadn’t started digging…he was still laying out for the dig.  I was glad he was concientious about his preparation, but not so happy it was taking so long.  My normal machine operator can dig a basement for a 3000 square foot two story home in less than a day.  This guy is on schedule to take two, maybe three days.  Thank goodness my contracts are written by the job and are not based on time and material.

So, make sure you hire subcontractors that do what you are asking them to do on a regular basis.  I know it sounds like it should be a “no brainer” for a commercial HVAC installer to install the heating and cooling system in your home.  After all, a home should be easier than a commercial building right?  Wrong.  The methods and products are completely different from commercial to residential construction.
