Customer Question: Is There a Maximum Step Riser Height?
0 Comments | Posted by armchairbuilder in Owner-Builder
Good afternoon,
I am in the process of having a new driveway put in. The cement extends to
by the back door. The height of the old door step was 5″ high, after they
poured on friday the height of the new door step is 8″. Is there a minimum/maximum door step height? Thank You, Irene S.
Hi Irene. Yes. Per the 2018 International Residential Code the maximum stair riser height is 8-1/4″. I’ve typed a small portion of the code I’m referencing below. Keep in mind, your local building department may be enforcing a different building code. You may want to call and ask them what the maximum riser height is per your local building code.
R311.7.5.1 Risers
The riser height shall be not more than 8 1/4 -inches (209 mm). The riser shall be measured vertically between leading edges of the adjacent treads. The greatest riser height within any flight of stairs shall not exceed the smallest by more than 3/8 inch (9.5 mm).
Good luck to you!
